Fall Care 2020
Well, it’s been quite the year, hasn’t it?! The one constant for Farm Discovery, and we’re sure for most of you, has been change. After a decade of regular programs, everything is new again. Despite the stress of uncertainty the last 6 months, our team has banded together to design and implement 4 new programs (Produce Distribution, Summer Farm Care, Virtual Field Trips, and Fall Farm Care), all in response to community needs related to the pandemic.
Our latest program, Fall Farm Care, is a chance to relieve some of our community’s child care needs while schools remain closed to in-person instruction. In the mornings we support distance learning during class video meetings and asynchronous learning. Afternoons as spent exploring the farm with peers. Activities include lessons in earth science, natural history, nutrition, and environmental stewardship; farming and animal husbandry; and crafting from natural materials.
We initially committed to providing scholarships to at least 25% of participants, but it became clear quickly that we needed more. The program is currently at 62% scholarships. With help of community partners and donors, we hope to continue to extend this holistic and safe option to more families in need!
