Mushroom Foraging Workshop

Overview

Participants will join an expert-led guided walk on Live Earth Farm- highlighting edible and non-edible fungi found in Santa Cruz County.

Mushroom Walk:

This is an immersive, hands-on introduction to mushroom foraging and forest ecology led by local expert, Starlynn Hartnek. This workshop emphasizes real-world identification skills, seasonal species recognition, and understanding the trees and habitats mushrooms associate with. Expert guides will also point out other seasonal wild foods encountered along the route, Participants will practice observation and identification skills in the field, compare edible species with toxic lookalikes, and use field guides to examine found specimens.

What to Expect:

Participants will receive clear guidance on where and how foraging is permitted, along with local regulations, ethical harvesting practices, and safety considerations. The workshop concludes with a culinary presentation featuring mushroom-based snacks.

Farm Date Night: Childcare & Campfire

February 13, 2026 5:00 pm - February 15, 2026 9:00 pm

Enjoy a relaxed evening out while your kids enjoy an unforgettable night on the farm. Children will be cared for by Farm Discovery staff and enjoy an evening filled with hands-on crafts, group games, and time to explore the farm after dark. A guided night walk will invite kids to look up at the stars and listen for nocturnal wildlife—spotting signs of bats, owls, and other nighttime creatures—before gathering around the campfire for stories and treats.

Please send kiddos to the farm having eaten dinner, with a water bottle and a snack, as well as good walking shoes and a jacket (it gets chilly at night!)

Harvesting & Pickling Workshop

February 21, 2026 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join us for a hands-on experience that takes you from garden to pantry in one rewarding day. This workshop combines the satisfaction of harvest with the practical skills of food preservation, ensuring you can enjoy fresh flavors year-round.

Part 1: Harvest Experience We’ll begin by heading down to Live Earth Farm, where you’ll harvest vegetables at peak ripeness. You’ll gather a variety of seasonal produce that we’ll transform together in the kitchen.

Part 2: Kitchen Preservation Moving indoors, we’ll explore multiple preservation methods including water bath canning, quick pickling and lactobacillus fermentation. You’ll work with the vegetables you’ve just harvested, learning food safety principles, proper preparation methods, and storage best practices. Each participant will take home three jars of preserved goods along with recipes and confidence to continue preserving at home.

All materials will be provided, but bring your own jars if desired!

Candle-Making Workshop

This hands-on candle-making workshop introduces participants to the basics of crafting simple, functional candles using ethically and sustainably sourced materials from the farm. Participants will explore natural scents, including essential oils, and learn safe pouring techniques, scent blending, and best practices for use and care. Each person will leave with a finished candle and the skills to continue making candles at home.

All materials will be provided, but bring your own jars if desired!

2-Day Sourdough Boule Workshop

Join Molly for a two part sourdough boule workshop! This is an expansion of the single day sourdough workshop, and will include the science of gluten, how processing affects our food, fermentation tips, and two days of instruction (for proper rise and structure strengthening). We’ll cover types of flour, ideal fermentation conditions, troubleshooting your dough, and various kneading techniques. You’ll leave with more knowledge of dough and how to work with varying conditions.

You’ll go home with a lovely loaf, as well as some fresh starter with care instructions.

Please wear closed-toed & close-heeded shoes, tie up long hair, and bring a water bottle & snack! All supplies will be provided.

Fermented Drinks Workshop

Fermented Drinks Workshop: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Wellness

Join us for a hands-on exploration of traditional fermentation as we craft three probiotic-rich beverages: water kefir, kombucha, and beet kvass.

You’ll learn to make light, effervescent water kefir using living kefir grains, brew tangy kombucha with a SCOBY culture, and create earthy, mineral-rich beet kvass using simple salt fermentation. We’ll cover fermentation safety, troubleshooting, and culture maintenance throughout.

Each participant takes home starter cultures, detailed instructions, and samples to continue brewing at home. Perfect for beginners or those looking to expand their fermentation skills, this workshop will give you the confidence to create these ancient wellness drinks in your own kitchen.

Participants will learn fundamental sketching & watercolor techniques, from mixing colors and controlling washes to layering and adding detail, while observing and sketching the local flora and fauna of the farm. Guided exercises will help you translate your observations into expressive, dynamic paintings, encouraging both careful study and creative interpretation. Along the way, you’ll develop skills in composition, color, and texture, using the shapes and patterns of leaves, flowers, and wildlife as inspiration. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with original watercolor artworks that capture the character of the farm’s landscapes, as well as the confidence to continue painting on your own.

Natural Dyes Workshop

May 16, 2026 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Explore the process of creating color directly from the land. Participants will learn how to sustainably and ethically gather flowers, plants, and vegetables from the farm, with an emphasis on seasonal materials and respectful harvesting practices. Guided by instructors, you’ll observe how different plant parts—petals, leaves, roots, and skins—produce a wide range of natural hues.

After gathering, the workshop moves into dye preparation, where you’ll learn the basics of extracting color, preparing fibers, and understanding how mordants and plant chemistry affect tone and longevity. Participants will experiment with dye baths using farm-sourced materials, gaining practical skills and insight into natural dye techniques that can be replicated at home. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with naturally dyed pieces and a deeper appreciation for color, sustainability, and the connection between art, agriculture, and the living landscape.

Natural Printmaking Workshop

Discover the shapes, textures, and patterns of the farm in this printmaking experience. Participants will gather and work with materials ethically and sustainably sourced from the farm—leaves, flowers, spores, fibers, and other organic elements—to explore stamp-making, monoprinting, lithography, and layered compositions. Guided exercises encourage close observation of the farm’s flora & fauna, soils, and landscapes, allowing each particiapnt to translate local ecology into unique, textured prints that capture the character of the land.
