Courtnay Perry is one of our amazing and dedicated volunteers. We are incredibly grateful for her positive energy and enthusiasm these past few weekends, being in the field for 80+ hours! Read below to get to know more about Courtnay.
What’s your background? (Career, interests, etc.,)
- As a technical writer, I have always planted a garden wherever I’ve gone. Something about putting my hands in the dirt, growing things that are little magic acts that nourish. Have you ever seen a bean sprout come up? : )
What do you do for Farm Discovery?
- I have helped weed, plant and maintain FD fields over the summer.
How did you hear about Farm Discovery?
- My sister (Natasha, who is on the board of directors) graciously offered up my services. We joke it is my internship that I have always dreamed of but really it’s been my chance to make a difference.
How did you get involved?
- I initially came out to FD to weed “a garden” which turned into “plant a field” which turned into “plant another field” which turned into “pick the strawberries” which made me realize I had to share these amazing experiences (to taste a red, juicy, ripe strawberry warmed from the sun) with everyone I knew. Every week, I can barely wait to come back to see what’s going on with the fields.
What part of FD’s mission is most meaningful to you?
- Community and learning where my food comes from and how my food gets to my plate. Theoretically I understand where my food comes from but it wasn’t until I picked strawberries for three hours and could barely walk (a bit of dramatization), that I realized it’s not machines that put food on my table but hard work and deep knowledge, all cooperating with nature that does. All systems that need our support on all sorts of levels.
