Summer Farm Camp at Farm Discovery is all about exploring, creating, and connecting with the land, animals, and each other!
At the start of the week, campers get know their peers with group games, creating name tags (via wood cookies) and learning about a week at farm camp entails. Some groups help with animal chores – feeding the chickens and goats, collecting eggs, and tidying their enclosures. Others brush the horses. Throughout the week all campers get to experience what it is like to care for all our animals and why they are important to the farm.
If there is a quintessential camp activity – its arts & crafts, campers at Farm Discovery tie – dye, sculpt with clay, draw neat nature they’ve spotted, make natural paint brushes, and contribute to long term projects like the compost mural.
A crucial part of farming is compost. With our CCAC fellows (Isabel & Thea), campers learn about green and brown stuff, how to check the temperature, and what ingredients makes compost so rich and fertile.
To compliment all the energetic activities, daily journaling, reading, reflection is incorporated so campers have a moment to recharge.
And of course its not Farm Camp without a tractor ride and a Redwoods hike!
Campers learn basic kitchen skills throughout the week by preparing tasty snacks with our farm produce, which sometimes campers harvest from the fields (check out the recipe we shared if you want a taste of what campers are making)! Excited to show off what they learned, campers prepare snacks to share with their families during Friday’s Family Social Hour.
Camp is busy but campers have a magical time. With every activity, we see our kids growing in confidence, curiosity, and connection. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer holds!
