Local Teens are invited to learn with Farm Discovery this summer.  Since 2009 Farm Discovery has offered teen leadership positions at their Farm Camps. This year Farm Discovery is offering 2, 4 week sessions of summer care/camps with 4 positions for teens at each one. Teens will help guide campers through learning and play in our garden, fields and kitchen classroom as well as learning to care for our milking goats and laying hens.

Watsonville, CA, March 8, 2021 – In the summer of 2021 Farm Discovery will host eight weeks of summer camp at Live Earth Farm.  They offer 4 Leader in Training (LIT) positions for teens, ages 14 and up. The camps are limited to 28 kids in order to create an intimate, low risk experience. LITs help to develop a compassionate, multi-age community of young farmers, artists, foodies, naturalists, and environmentalists.

The LIT positions at Live Earth Farm camps offer teens an opportunity to develop leadership skills and teach and learn farming, food preparation and ecology alongside their campers. Each teen works with their co-LIT and staff to help manage 10-12 campers. Their guided responsibilities include assisting with crafts and games, managing behavior during instruction, looking out for camper care through things like water breaks, and leading community-building activities. Before camp, teens participate in a training day with Farm Discovery staff.  They learn about the developmental stages of the campers they will work with, familiarize themselves with the farm and farm projects, learn group management techniques, and community building games.

Program goals include:

  • Develop leadership skills
    • Effective, positive communication
    • Strategic thinking
    • Being a team player
    • Positive conflict management
    • Planning and delivery
    • Public speaking
  • Provide hands on experience working with kids and in outdoor education
  • Provide mentorship in pursuing creative and/or career interests
  • Gain first-hand knowledge of organic farming and gardening practices
  • Have fun!
